THE BOOK OF DANIEL | WEEK 7
Day 6
“That very night Belshazzar, king of the Babylonians, was slain, and Darius the Mede took over the kingdom.” - Daniel 5:30–31
What if the greatest difference between a life that honors God and one that doesn't is simply whether we respond when He speaks? Every day presents us with opportunities to obey, but those opportunities don't last forever. Belshazzar's story reminds us that delayed obedience eventually becomes disobedience.
Daniel 5 ends with sobering finality.
The handwriting on the wall was not an empty warning. God had revealed the truth, extended mercy, and given Belshazzar every opportunity to humble himself. Yet instead of responding, he continued living as though nothing had changed.
That very night, his kingdom ended.
His story reminds us that hearing God's Word is never the goal.
Responding to it is.
Throughout this week we've seen how pride quietly hardens the heart. We've also seen that humility keeps us close to God. As we spend time in His Word, surrender our plans, and respond to His voice, He begins transforming us from the inside out.
Now we come to the most important question:
What will we do with what God has shown us?
James reminds us to be doers of the Word and not hearers only. Spiritual maturity isn't measured by how much Scripture we know but by how faithfully we live it. Every step of obedience deepens our trust in God and allows Him to shape our character.
That doesn't mean we need to change everything overnight.
Most spiritual growth happens one faithful decision at a time.
Perhaps God has been prompting us to spend consistent time in His Word.
Maybe He's been asking us to surrender an area of pride, forgive someone, restore a relationship, or trust Him with something we've been trying to control ourselves.
Whatever He has been saying, today is the day to respond.
Not because we're trying to earn God's love, but because we've already received it through Christ.
Daniel shows us what that kind of life looks like.
When the crisis came, he wasn't searching for God for the first time. Years of faithfully walking with the Lord had prepared him for that moment. His courage before kings was the result of quiet faithfulness long before anyone was watching.
The same principle applies to us.
Our greatest moments of faith are usually built through ordinary days of obedience.
Every time we open God's Word...
Every time we choose humility over pride...
Every time we forgive instead of holding on to bitterness...
Every time we trust God instead of ourselves...
He is shaping us into the likeness of Christ.
Those choices don't only affect us.
They shape our homes.
Our families notice what we value. They see whether our faith is merely something we talk about or something we genuinely live. None of us will model perfection, but by God's grace we can model repentance, humility, and faithfulness.
That kind of legacy is built over a lifetime.
As we finish this week's journey, let's take a moment to reflect:
What has God been teaching us this week?
Where has He been inviting us to trust Him more?
What is one step of obedience we can take today?
How can our lives better reflect the humility of Christ?
Let's not allow this week to become another devotional we read and quickly forget.
Allow it to become a turning point.
The wonderful news is that we don't walk this path alone. Through Jesus Christ we have been forgiven, made new, and given the Holy Spirit, who empowers us to obey. The God who calls us to humility also gives us the grace to live it.
So today, let's leave Belshazzar's example behind and follow the example of Daniel.
Let's choose humility over pride.
Faith over self-reliance.
Obedience over delay.
And let's trust that as we faithfully walk with Christ, He will continue transforming our hearts, strengthening our homes, and using our lives to point the next generation toward Him.
Because when all is said and done, our legacy won't be measured by what we accumulated or accomplished.
It will be measured by whether we faithfully walked with the Lord.
May that be true of us today and in every day God graciously gives us.
