THE BOOK OF DANIEL | WEEK 9
Day 6
“My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight… And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound was found on him, because he had trusted in his God.” - Daniel 6:22–23
What if the situation we’re trying to escape is actually the place where God wants to reveal His faithfulness the most?
Daniel didn’t avoid the lions’ den.
He went into it.
That’s important.
Because we often measure God’s faithfulness by how well He keeps us out of difficult situations. But in this story, God’s faithfulness is revealed not in prevention, but in preservation.
Daniel is thrown into a sealed den. A stone is placed over it. The king’s signet ring locks it shut. From a human perspective, the situation is final.
There is no escape.
No appeal.
No intervention.
And yet, God moves.
He doesn’t remove Daniel from the den.
He meets him in it.
“My God sent his angel… and shut the mouths of the lions.”
That means the place designed to destroy him became the place where God demonstrated His power.
And this is where the devotional becomes deeply practical for us:
Faithfulness doesn’t always keep us from hard situations, but it positions us to experience God in them.
Daniel’s story forces us to confront how we define deliverance.
We often think deliverance means:
Avoiding the problem
Escaping the pressure
Being removed from difficulty
But biblical deliverance often looks like:
Strength in the middle of pressure
Peace in the middle of uncertainty
Protection in the middle of danger
Daniel still went into the den, but he didn’t go in alone.
And neither do we.
Now let’s bring this into our lives, because this is where we live it out.
What is our “lions’ den” right now?
Where do we feel:
Pressured
Misunderstood
Targeted
Stuck in a situation we didn’t choose
Maybe it’s a work environment where integrity costs us.
Maybe it’s a relationship that feels strained or unfair.
Maybe it’s a season where we’re doing the right thing, but not seeing the results we expected.
And if we’re honest, the natural response is to want out.
“God, fix this.”
“God, remove this.”
“God, change this.”
But what if God is saying:
“Trust Me in this.”
Because there are things God wants to form in us, and reveal through us, that can happen in the den.
That’s not easy to accept.
But it’s powerful when we do.
Because it shifts our posture from resistance to trust.
Now, let’s talk about what it means to live this out.
This isn’t just about understanding the story, it’s about stepping into it.
1. Stay faithful where we are, even if it’s hard
Daniel didn’t change his posture when things got difficult.
He didn’t:
Compromise to avoid consequences
Try to control the outcome
Panic when things didn’t go his way
He stayed faithful.
That’s our call too.
Not simply to search for the fastest escape, but to remain faithful right where we are.
Because sometimes the breakthrough isn’t in leaving, it’s in enduring with integrity.
2. Trust God to defend us instead of forcing control
Daniel couldn’t control what happened next.
He couldn’t open the sealed den.
He couldn’t silence the lions.
He couldn’t determine the outcome.
He had reached a place where only God could do what needed to be done.
And that’s difficult for us.
Because we like control.
We want to fix things, manage perceptions, protect ourselves, and make sure everything turns out the way we think it should.
But there are moments where the most powerful thing we can do is entrust ourselves to God.
Not passively, but faithfully.
Doing what is right…
And trusting God with the results.
3. Expect God to show up, even if it looks different than we imagined
Daniel probably didn’t expect a peaceful night with lions.
But that’s exactly what happened.
God showed up, but not in the way anyone would have predicted.
And that’s often how He works.
He may not change the situation immediately.
He may not remove the pressure instantly.
But He will be present with us.
And His presence changes everything.
Because when God is with us:
Fear doesn’t have to control us
Pressure doesn’t have to define us
Opposition doesn’t get the final word
Now here’s where we reflect.
Because living this out isn’t just action, it’s awareness.
Let’s ask ourselves honestly:
Where have we been trying to escape instead of trust?
Where are we tempted to compromise to make things easier?
Where do we need to trust God instead of forcing control?
Let’s sit with those questions.
Let’s not rush past them.
Because reflection is where truth becomes personal, and where God can begin changing how we respond.
And finally, don’t miss how the story ends.
Daniel isn’t just preserved, he’s lifted out.
The king is overjoyed. Daniel is brought out of the den. No wound is found on him.
Why?
Scripture gives us the answer:
“Because he had trusted in his God.”
Daniel couldn’t control the lions.
But he could trust God.
Daniel couldn’t determine the outcome.
But he could remain faithful.
Daniel couldn’t see what God was doing in the darkness of that den.
But he could believe that the God he had served continually was still with him there.
And then, in time, the truth surfaced.
Daniel’s faithfulness was vindicated.
He didn’t have to abandon his convictions to preserve himself.
He simply had to remain faithful and entrust the outcome to God.
That’s the final encouragement for us:
We don’t have to control the battle, we are called to remain faithful and trust God with what happens next.
Faithfulness keeps us steady when others misunderstand us.
Faithfulness keeps our character intact when compromise seems easier.
Faithfulness keeps us anchored to God when circumstances tempt us to panic.
And over time, a faithful life speaks for itself.
So today, let’s do something real:
Stay faithful in one area where we’ve been tempted to drift.
Choose integrity in one situation where compromise feels easier.
Trust God in one place where we’ve been trying to control the outcome.
And then let’s reflect:
If God doesn’t remove this situation immediately… can we trust Him to meet us in it?
Because that’s where Daniel experienced the faithfulness of God.
Not outside the den.
Right in the middle of it.
And whatever our “den” looks like today, we can enter it with the same confidence:
The God we trusted before the pressure is still God in the middle of it.
