DEEP - Week 3
Day 2
“Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.” - Mark 4:16–17
Some of the most dangerous rocks in our spiritual lives are the ones nobody can see. Everything can look healthy above ground while something beneath the surface quietly prevents us from going deeper.
That is what makes rocky soil so deceptive.
It looks good.
The seed sprouts.
Growth becomes visible.
There is joy.
There is enthusiasm.
But underneath the surface, something is blocking the roots.
That gives us an important question to ask:
What is beneath our surface?
We can attend church, worship, enjoy being around Christians, and genuinely receive the Word while still having something underneath that needs to be addressed.
Eventually, life applies pressure.
Jesus uses the picture of persecution and trouble.
The word used for tribulation carries the idea of pressing and squeezing like grapes in a wine press.
Pressure builds.
Life squeezes.
And what is underneath us begins to show.
Sometimes that pressure comes through rejection.
Following Jesus may change some of our relationships.
We may still be included in the large gathering but no longer invited to the smaller one afterward.
At work, we may once have been on the inside but suddenly discover we are no longer included in “the meeting before the meeting.”
Sometimes the pressure comes through insults.
People may mock our beliefs.
They may misrepresent us.
Misquote us.
Say things about us that simply are not true.
And as our lives, families, or organizations grow in influence, criticism may increase.
With more blessings can come more criticism.
But Jesus wants us to understand that these things themselves are not what cause us to fall away.
The heat exposes the root system.
When persecution comes, we get to see whether our joy is real or whether it has been built on circumstances.
When everything is going well, almost anyone can appear joyful.
But what happens when life does not meet our expectations?
What happens when we are criticized?
What happens when we are rejected?
What happens when someone hurts us?
What happens when something changes that we did not want changed?
Those moments reveal something about our depth.
We may discover that an offense has much more power over us than we realized.
We may discover that we have been carrying an old wound.
We may discover that our spiritual enthusiasm was stronger than our spiritual roots.
That does not mean the pressure has defeated us.
It means the pressure has shown us where we need to go deeper.
The hot sun can drive healthy roots deeper.
That means even the difficult things we experience can become part of how we grow.
Persecution can actually make our faith strong.
Rejection can even become confirmation that we are following Jesus because Jesus told us rejection would come.
The Christian life was never presented as the easiest way to live.
Jesus prepares us for pressure.
And He teaches us to prepare by developing roots.
So we have to look beneath the surface.
Where do we become offended easily?
What kind of criticism immediately changes our attitude?
What rejection stays with us?
What disappointment are we still carrying?
What happens inside us when life does not go according to our expectations?
We do not ask those questions to condemn ourselves.
We ask because we want roots.
We want God’s Word to break through the surface and go deep.
We do not want to be people who begin with tremendous enthusiasm and then slowly cool off.
We do not want to lose our desire for God, church, and His presence when life becomes difficult.
We want seeds that endure.
And endurance requires us to become willing to examine what is beneath the surface.
