DEEP - Week 3
Day 4
“See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no root of bitterness grows up to cause trouble and defile many.” - Hebrews 12:15
We cannot control every offense that comes our way, but we can refuse to let that offense become a root. The wound may have been real. The disappointment may still hurt. But we do not have to let bitterness decide what grows next.
Hebrews tells us to “see to it.”
That means we have a role to play.
We guard our root system.
We pay attention to what is growing beneath the surface.
We do not simply wait until bitterness has spread into every area of our lives.
We address it.
That requires us to be honest.
Maybe we are dwelling on the past.
We keep replaying the argument.
We keep thinking about what was said.
We keep remembering what we wish we had said.
Maybe jealousy is surfacing.
Something good happens to someone who hurt us, and instead of being able to move forward, resentment rises.
Maybe we have developed a victim mentality.
We feel that someone owes us an apology, and we have begun recruiting other people into the offense.
Maybe it is irritability.
Our temper has become shorter.
Minor things produce major reactions.
Our spirit has become negative.
We are more judgmental.
We struggle to receive correction.
Those things can point to something deeper.
We have to discover the thing behind the thing.
That is part of doing the deep work.
The goal is not to pretend the hurt never happened.
It happened.
Forgiveness does not require us to pretend that trust has been restored either.
Trust has to be earned over time.
We can forgive someone.
We can love them.
And we can still recognize that there has not been enough fruit of repentance to restore trust.
Forgiveness is mandatory, but reconciliation is not.
That distinction helps us deal honestly with bitterness without pretending wisdom no longer matters.
Our responsibility is to keep bitterness from taking root in us.
So today, we practice that.
We identify the offense.
Not somebody else’s offense.
Ours.
What are we still replaying?
What disappointment still changes our mood when we think about it?
Whose success bothers us?
Whose failure secretly makes us happy?
Where have we recruited others into our hurt?
What minor situation keeps producing an unusually strong reaction in us?
Then we look behind it.
Maybe the current irritation is not the real issue.
Maybe something deeper has been sitting beneath the surface for a long time.
This is where God calls us to do the deep work.
We refuse to let the root keep growing.
We choose to forgive.
We choose not to dwell on the past.
We renounce jealousy and anger.
We refuse the victim mentality.
We confront irritability.
And then we trust God to do what we cannot do.
We do the deep work and trust God to do the healing.
There may still be pain.
There may still be questions.
There may still be consequences.
But bitterness does not get to own our hearts.
We can choose to trust God, obey God, and serve God today.
We can guard the seed of His Word and allow it to break through the surface.
We can want His Word to grow in us more than we want to be right.
That is a real step toward depth.
And depth is how we become seeds that endure.
