DEEP - Week 6
Day 1
“Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.” - Mark 4:18–19
What if the greatest obstacle to what God wants to do in our lives isn't what's happening around us, but what's happening within us? What if the condition of our hearts is keeping us from experiencing the spiritual growth God desires?
In Mark chapter 4, Jesus tells one of His most important parables. He describes a farmer scattering seed that lands on four different types of soil. Some seed falls along a path, some on rocky ground, some among thorns, and some on good soil.
Jesus explains that the seed represents the Word of God, while the different soils represent the conditions of the human heart.
What's interesting is how much importance Jesus places on this particular parable. In Mark 4:13, He asks His disciples, “Don't we understand this parable? How then will we understand any parable?”
Jesus is making something clear. If we don't understand what happens when God's Word encounters the human heart, we're going to struggle to understand much of what God wants to accomplish in our lives.
The central truth is this: Everything God wants to produce in our lives through His Word is connected to the condition of our hearts.
God's Word is powerful. It has the ability to transform our thinking, restore relationships, strengthen our faith, and change the direction of our families. But Jesus teaches that the condition of our hearts determines how we receive that Word and whether it produces lasting fruit.
And that means there is a war for our hearts.
In the third soil, Jesus describes something particularly dangerous. The seed begins growing, but thorns eventually surround it and choke it, preventing it from becoming fruitful.
Jesus identifies three thorns: the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the desires for other things.
Notice that the seed actually begins to grow. The problem isn't that God's Word was never heard. The problem is that other things began competing with it.
This is where the parable becomes personal.
We can hear God's Word on Sunday, believe what it says, and genuinely desire to follow Jesus. Yet throughout the week, other things begin demanding our attention, affection, and energy.
Responsibilities increase. Financial pressures grow. Opportunities arise. We become consumed with what we want to accomplish, what we hope to obtain, or what we believe will make life better.
Without realizing it, the desires of our hearts can begin crowding out the very Word we received.
Jesus isn't suggesting that responsibilities, goals, or possessions are automatically sinful. He's warning us that anything competing with God for first place in our hearts can become spiritually dangerous.
We can be surrounded by God's blessings and still allow our hearts to drift away from the One who provided them.
We can become so focused on building a successful life that we neglect developing a spiritually fruitful life.
We can become so concerned with what our families have that we overlook who our families are becoming.
This is why Jesus directs our attention beneath the surface.
Our spiritual lives aren't determined simply by what we know, what we attend, or what we accomplish. They're deeply connected to what is happening within our hearts.
A heart crowded with competing desires will struggle to produce the fruit God intends.
But a heart surrendered to Jesus becomes good soil where His Word can take root and grow.
As we begin this week, we need to recognize that the battle for our spiritual growth isn't always a battle against something outside us. Sometimes it's a battle over what we've allowed to grow inside us.
God wants more than our outward religious activity. He wants our hearts.
And if we're going to grow deep in our relationship with Him, we must be willing to examine what has been competing for His place in our lives.
