DEEP - Week 3
Day 6
“Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.” - Mark 4:16–17
Eventually the heat comes. The question is not whether we were excited when the seed first sprouted; the question is whether we have built a root system capable of keeping us standing when life presses, squeezes, disappoints, and hurts.
Jesus tells us trouble will come.
Hard things are coming.
Sad things are coming.
Unfair things are coming.
How we begin is no guarantee of how we will end.
That does not have to frighten us.
It should prepare us.
God wants us to do the hard work of developing our spiritual root system so that we become seeds that last.
The trials themselves are not what make us fall away.
The heat simply reveals our roots.
So now we do something real.
We guard the root system.
We look honestly at what has been growing beneath the surface.
If we are carrying bitterness toward a person, we address it.
If we are carrying bitterness toward God, we address it.
If we keep dwelling on the past, we stop feeding it.
If jealousy and anger have been growing, we confront them.
If we have developed a victim mentality, we stop recruiting other people into our offense.
If irritability, negativity, ingratitude, or judgment have become normal, we look for the thing behind the thing.
We refuse to let an unhealed wound become a root that troubles our families, friendships, and church.
Because whatever it takes to offend us is all that it will take to defeat us.
Then we make another decision.
We get serious about depth.
Enthusiasm will not carry us through all four quarters.
We need the Word.
Not occasionally.
Not only when everything feels good.
We need a steady, heavy drinking of God’s living Word going into the deep roots of our hearts.
We guard the seed.
We allow it to break through the surface.
We let God’s Word become more important to us than being right.
And when pressure comes, we remember what the pressure is showing us.
Our depth gets shown when the heat comes on.
Criticism can reveal our roots.
Rejection can reveal our roots.
Insults can reveal our roots.
Uncertainty can reveal our roots.
Disappointment can reveal our roots.
Even betrayal can reveal our roots.
And when we discover a shallow place, we do not have to run.
We go deeper.
That is the work before us.
We choose to trust God.
We choose to obey God.
We choose to serve God today.
We do the deep work and trust God to do the healing.
Then we keep growing.
Over time, our lives will show whether we have done the deep work.
The early church wanted to see fruit. They wanted to know that someone was not simply a surface person but was rooted in God’s Word.
That kind of rootedness takes time.
And that is okay.
Our goal is not merely to start fast.
Our goal is to endure.
We want roots capable of reaching the water, strength, and nourishment we need when the surface becomes hot and dry.
We want God’s Word deep enough that offense cannot defeat us.
We want roots strong enough to keep us standing through hard things, sad things, and unfair things.
So we keep doing the deep work.
We guard against bitterness.
We release offense.
We trust God with what we cannot understand.
We allow His Word to break through the surface.
Because the secret to endurance is depth.
And we are becoming seeds that endure.
