Day 1

“Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.” - Mark 4:18–19

What if the greatest threat to what God wants to grow in your life isn’t something obviously sinful, but something painfully ordinary? Jesus warns us that something as familiar as worry can slowly choke the life out of the truth God has planted in our hearts.

In Mark 4, Jesus tells one of His most important parables. A farmer scatters seed, and that seed falls on different kinds of soil. Later, Jesus explains that the seed represents the Word of God and the soil represents the condition of the human heart.

That means this parable is not primarily about farming. It is about receiving.

God speaks. God plants truth. God gives promises. But what happens after the seed lands matters.

Jesus even tells His disciples, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable?” In other words, Pay attention to this one. If you understand how your heart receives God’s Word, you will understand something foundational about your relationship with Him.

Everything God desires to produce in us begins with His truth being received into our hearts.

That is why Proverbs tells us to guard our hearts. That is why Jeremiah says we will find God when we seek Him with all our hearts. And that is why Jesus spends so much time talking about what gets inside us.

There is a battle for your heart.

And one of the enemies Jesus identifies is worry.

Notice what happens to the seed among the thorns. The seed isn't bad. The soil isn't completely hard. The person actually hears the Word.

The problem is that something else begins growing alongside it.

Worry.

Jesus calls it “the worries of this life.”

Bills.

Children.

Marriage.

Health.

Work.

The future.

The phone call you haven't received.

The conversation you don't know how to have.

The test results you're waiting on.

The child who is making decisions you cannot control.

The situation at work that could change everything.

These are real concerns. Jesus isn't pretending they aren't.

But He is warning us that legitimate concerns can become spiritually destructive when they are allowed to dominate our hearts.

Think about what thorns actually do to a plant. They don't have hands that wrap around another plant and squeeze it. They compete with it. They steal the resources the healthy plant needs, water, nutrients, sunlight, room to grow.

That is exactly what worry does spiritually.

Worry steals your attention.

Worry consumes your emotional energy.

Worry occupies your imagination.

Worry keeps your mind rehearsing everything that might happen instead of remembering what God has already said.

And slowly, almost imperceptibly, worry can become louder than the Word.

God says, “I am with you.”

Worry says, “But what if you're alone?”

God says, “I will provide.”

Worry says, “But what if there isn't enough?”

God says, “Trust Me.”

Worry says, “You need to figure everything out first.”

The question is not whether God's Word is powerful. The seed is powerful.

The question is: What are you allowing to grow beside it?

There are things you cannot control today. You cannot control every decision your children make. You cannot guarantee your financial future. You cannot control another person's opinion of you. You cannot guarantee your health. You cannot know everything tomorrow will bring.

But you can decide what gets the deepest roots in your heart.

Worry has never paid a bill.

Worry has never healed a body.

Worry has never restored a marriage.

Worry has never protected a child.

Worry has never guaranteed tomorrow.

Worry promises control but delivers exhaustion.

And Jesus wants something better for you.

He wants His Word to become fruitful in you.

So today, identify the thorn.

Finish this sentence honestly:

“The thing I am most tempted to worry about right now is __________.”

Don't hide it. Don't spiritualize it. Name it.

Then ask another question:

“What has God said that I am having trouble believing because this worry has become so loud?”

Maybe you believe God is faithful, but fear says this situation is different.

Maybe you believe God provides, but the numbers don't make sense.

Maybe you believe God loves your children, but you are terrified about their future.

Bring the worry into the light.

Then bring God's Word beside it.

The goal isn't pretending you don't have a problem. The goal is refusing to allow the problem to become bigger in your heart than the God who holds you.

You don't have to know what tomorrow holds.

You need to know which voice you will trust today.

The seed is already being planted.

Don't let worry choke the Word.
