Day 3

“If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, you of little faith?” - Matthew 6:30

You say you trust God, but if you're truthful, what you really want is a guarantee. You want God to tell you exactly how this situation ends, when it will change, and whether everyone you love will be okay.

That is why the battle against worry can be so difficult.

We want certainty.

We want to know.

Will the money be there?

Will my child be okay?

Will this relationship survive?

Will the doctor's report be good?

Will I keep my job?

Will this decision work out?

We imagine that if God would simply show us the outcome, then we could finally have peace.

But that isn't faith.

Faith isn't certainty about the outcome. Faith is confidence in the One who holds the outcome.

This is where worry exposes something deeper happening inside our hearts.

Worry often reveals our desire for control.

Think about someone you love driving a long distance. You might pray, “God, please keep them safe.”

That's a good prayer.

But worry wants something prayer cannot give you: absolute certainty about what will happen.

You cannot have that.

None of us can.

So eventually you face a choice.

Will your peace depend upon knowing what happens next?

Or will your peace rest in knowing the God who is already there?

Jesus points His listeners toward creation.

Look at the birds.

Look at the flowers.

Look at how your Father cares for what He has made.

Then Jesus asks a powerful question:

“Will he not much more clothe you?”

Jesus moves the conversation from circumstances to character.

Worry asks, “What is going to happen?”

Jesus asks, “Do you know your Father?”

That's the deeper issue.

If God is good only when life goes according to your plans, worry will dominate you.

If God is trustworthy only when you understand what He is doing, worry will dominate you.

If God's love must constantly be proven through comfortable circumstances, worry will dominate you.

But biblical faith says:

“I don't understand this, but I know God is faithful.”

“I don't know how this ends, but I know God is present.”

“I don't know what tomorrow holds, but I know tomorrow does not surprise God.”

This does not mean every circumstance will unfold the way you want.

Jesus never promises that.

Faith isn't pretending painful things never happen.

Faith is believing that no painful thing can separate God's children from His presence, His love, or His redemptive purposes in Christ.

That is much stronger than positive thinking.

Our ultimate confidence is not that life will always be easy. Our confidence is Jesus Christ Himself.

At the cross, circumstances looked completely out of control.

The disciples scattered.

Hope appeared buried.

Jesus was placed in a tomb.

But God was still working.

The resurrection reminds us that God's faithfulness is not limited by what we can presently see.

So maybe the thing troubling you today will not be resolved today.

Maybe the answer isn't coming this afternoon.

Maybe you won't know for several months.

Then today's spiritual work isn't figuring out tomorrow.

It's trusting God today.

Try this whenever worry begins demanding certainty.

Ask yourself:

What am I trying to know that God has not promised to tell me yet?

Then ask:

What has God already revealed about Himself that I can trust right now?

You may not know the outcome.

But you know His character.

You know Christ has loved you enough to give Himself for you.

You know God has promised His presence.

You know He hears prayer.

You know He gives wisdom when you ask.

You know His grace will meet you where obedience takes you.

Sometimes faith sounds less like a shout and more like a quiet sentence whispered repeatedly:

“God, I don't know what happens next, but I trust You.”

That's not weak faith.

That is faith refusing to demand tomorrow's answers before obeying God today.

The opposite of worry isn't certainty.

It's trust.
