WHAT JESUS SAID ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT
Day 1
“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” - Romans 8:14
What if we have been trying to figure out a road that God never intended us to navigate alone? We can spend enormous amounts of energy asking, What should we do next? while forgetting that God has already given us Someone who knows the way.
Jesus described the Holy Spirit as the “Spirit of truth.” He promised that the Spirit would live in us, teach us, remind us of His words, and lead us. The Holy Spirit is not merely a theological idea we believe in. He is the presence of God actively working within the lives of God’s children.
One helpful picture is to think of the Holy Spirit as a scout.
A scout goes ahead. A scout sees terrain we cannot see yet. A scout recognizes dangers, opportunities, and pathways before everyone else arrives. In sports, scouting gives a team information about what is coming so they can be prepared.
The Holy Spirit does something infinitely greater. He already knows what is around the corner.
We don't.
That difference matters.
We can see what is happening today, but God sees where today's decisions are taking us. We see an opportunity; He sees where it leads. We see a closed door; He knows what He may be protecting us from. We see a delay; He knows what He is preparing.
That is why Jesus told His disciples:
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach us all things and will remind us of everything I have said to us.” - John 14:26
The Spirit leads us by continually bringing us back to the truth Jesus has already spoken.
That means one of the most important ways we learn to recognize His leadership is through Scripture.
Sometimes we read a passage in the morning and nothing dramatic happens. There are no goosebumps. No overwhelming revelation. We simply read, underline something, think about it, and move on.
Then three weeks later, or maybe years later, we find ourselves facing a decision, and that Scripture suddenly comes alive in our hearts.
The Spirit has been preparing us.
That is one reason our time in God's Word matters so much. We are not simply collecting information. We are giving the Holy Spirit truth to illuminate and remind us of when we need it.
There may be decisions in our families right now that feel uncertain. There may be questions about children, marriage, work, finances, ministry, relationships, or the future.
Our first response does not have to be panic.
It can be surrender.
Instead of beginning with, “How are we going to figure this out?” we can begin with, “Holy Spirit, lead us.”
And then we open His Word.
We listen.
We obey what is already clear.
Because God's Spirit will never lead us contrary to God's Word. Feelings change. Circumstances change. Opinions change. God's truth does not.
Jesus said that rivers of living water would flow from within those who believe in Him. A river moves. It goes somewhere. It carries life beyond itself.
That is what God desires for us.
He does not simply want to guide us so that our lives become easier. He wants to lead us so that His life can flow through us into our homes, workplaces, churches, neighborhoods, and communities.
The Holy Spirit knows the way ahead.
Our responsibility is not to know everything He knows.
Our responsibility is to stay close enough to follow.
