WHAT JESUS SAID ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT
Day 4
“The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.” - Psalm 119:130
We cannot expect the Holy Spirit to regularly remind us of Scripture we rarely put into our hearts. If we want God's truth available in the pressure of tomorrow, we need to store it within us today.
This is where devotion moves from inspiration to practice.
Jesus said the Holy Spirit would teach us and remind us of what He had said.
Notice the word remind.
A reminder brings something back that has already been received.
That means our ordinary time in Scripture may be doing far more than we realize.
We might read something today that seems unrelated to anything happening in our lives. We may underline it, write it down, or think about it for a few minutes.
Then months later, we find ourselves sitting across from someone having a difficult conversation.
And suddenly that verse returns.
Or we face a decision.
The verse returns.
We are tempted.
The verse returns.
Our family enters a difficult season.
The verse returns.
That is not wasted devotional time.
That is preparation.
The message behind this week's devotional included a powerful example of Proverbs 24:27 being highlighted years before it became meaningful for a major decision:
“Finish our outdoor work and get our fields ready; after that, build our house.” - Proverbs 24:27
A passage noticed years earlier became something firm to stand on when a major decision arrived.
That should change the way we approach Scripture.
We aren't just reading for today.
We are storing truth for tomorrow.
God knows conversations we haven't had yet.
He knows temptations we haven't faced.
He knows opportunities we haven't received.
He knows crises we cannot anticipate.
And He can use His Word today to prepare us for all of them.
So let's make today's practice simple.
Before the day ends, let's spend focused time with one passage of Scripture. We don't need to cover ten chapters. We can slow down with one passage.
Read it several times.
Ask what it reveals about God.
Notice any command, promise, warning, or principle.
Then write down one verse that stands out.
Not because every verse that catches our attention is necessarily a secret message about our future. Scripture isn't a fortune cookie.
We are simply putting God's truth into our hearts.
If we have children at home, we can involve them.
At dinner, in the car, or before bed, we can ask:
“What is one thing God showed us in His Word today?”
Imagine what could happen if that became normal in our homes.
Not forced.
Not complicated.
Just consistent.
A family learning Scripture together becomes a family giving the Holy Spirit truth to illuminate again and again.
Our culture is already discipling our families.
Algorithms are teaching us what to desire.
Advertisements are teaching us what we supposedly need.
Entertainment is shaping our assumptions about relationships, sexuality, success, identity, and happiness.
So we must intentionally put something stronger into our homes.
God's Word.
We may not know why today's Scripture matters yet.
That's okay.
The Scout does.
We put the Word in our hearts today and trust the Holy Spirit to bring it back when we need it tomorrow.
