WHAT JESUS SAID ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT
Day 5
“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” - Galatians 5:25
We often want God's guidance without surrendering control. We want Him to show us the road ahead, as long as the road leads where we already decided we wanted to go.
But walking with the Holy Spirit requires something deeper than learning techniques for hearing God.
It requires surrender.
Paul says we are to keep in step with the Spirit.
That picture is deeply relational.
Keeping in step means adjusting our pace to someone else's.
If He stops, we stop.
If He moves, we move.
If He redirects, we turn.
That challenges the part of us that wants control.
Sometimes we ask God for a five-year plan when He gives us one faithful step.
We want certainty.
God asks for trust.
We want explanations.
God asks for obedience.
We want to know how everything will turn out.
God reminds us that He already knows.
This is where the Holy Spirit wants to change something inside us.
The greatest work of the Spirit isn't merely getting us to the right destination. It is forming the right kind of people while we travel there.
He is teaching us patience.
Humility.
Trust.
Courage.
Dependence.
Obedience.
Sometimes a closed door is doing something in us.
Sometimes waiting is doing something in us.
Sometimes uncertainty is revealing how much security we have placed in our own plans.
And sometimes God's direction challenges the contingencies we quietly attach to obedience.
We might say, “God, we will follow, as long as we can stay comfortable.”
Or, “We will obey, as long as it doesn't cost too much.”
Or, “We will go wherever God wants, as long as He doesn't send us there.”
But surrender doesn't negotiate the destination before saying yes.
Jesus modeled this perfectly.
His life was completely surrendered to the Father's will, even when obedience led Him toward the cross.
And because Jesus surrendered Himself completely, our salvation became possible.
The gospel reminds us that surrender is not placing ourselves into the hands of a cruel God.
We are placing ourselves into the hands of the Father who gave His Son for us.
We can trust Him.
Maybe there is an area where we have been asking for guidance when the deeper issue is surrender.
Maybe we already know the next faithful step.
We just don't like it.
Maybe we need to forgive.
Maybe we need to apologize.
Maybe we need to slow down.
Maybe we need to say no.
Maybe we need to say yes.
Maybe we need to release a dream we have been gripping too tightly.
Today, instead of only asking, “Holy Spirit, where are we going?” we can ask a deeper question:
“Holy Spirit, what needs to change inside us so we can follow wherever You lead?”
That is where spiritual maturity grows.
The goal isn't simply to become better at recognizing direction.
The goal is to become people whose answer to Jesus is increasingly:
Yes.
Before we know all the details.
Before we understand everything.
Before we see the whole road.
Because the Scout knows the way.
And we know the Scout.
