WHAT JESUS SAID ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT
Day 6
“Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” - John 7:38
If God's Spirit only makes our own lives more comfortable, we have misunderstood the river. Rivers move outward. They carry life somewhere beyond where they began.
Jesus stood during the feast and cried out that anyone who was thirsty could come to Him and drink. John explains that Jesus was speaking about the Holy Spirit.
Jesus didn't say a drop of living water.
He said rivers.
There is abundance in that picture.
And there is movement.
A pool can be contained. A river travels.
That means the Spirit's work in us was never intended to terminate with us.
God guides us so we can become a blessing to others.
He teaches us so we can teach our children.
He comforts us so we can comfort someone else.
He gives us wisdom so we can serve people well.
He directs our steps so that our lives can intersect with people who desperately need the hope of Jesus.
This changes the way we think about God's guidance.
Instead of only asking, “God, what is best for us?” we begin asking:
“God, where can our obedience bring life?”
Our families need that perspective.
Our children need to see that Christianity isn't simply about attending church and trying to stay out of trouble.
Following Jesus is an adventure of obedience.
We wake up knowing that the Spirit of God lives within us and that ordinary moments can carry eternal significance.
A conversation can matter.
An act of generosity can matter.
An invitation can matter.
A word of encouragement can matter.
Stopping to pray with someone can matter.
Choosing integrity when nobody sees can matter.
Opening our home can matter.
Serving someone who cannot repay us can matter.
The Holy Spirit knows things we don't know.
We may feel prompted to encourage someone without realizing they were ready to quit.
We may feel compelled to call someone without knowing they had been praying for help.
We may have an idea that seems small without knowing how God intends to multiply it.
We know in part.
God sees the whole.
So let's do something real today.
Let's ask:
“Holy Spirit, who can we bless today?”
Then let's pay attention.
Maybe a name comes to mind.
Maybe we notice a need.
Maybe Scripture reminds us of something.
Maybe our spouse sees something we don't.
Maybe an opportunity appears in the middle of an otherwise ordinary day.
We don't have to manufacture something spectacular.
We simply stay available.
And tonight, let's reflect on two questions:
Where did we sense God's direction today?
Did we obey when we recognized it?
That second question matters.
Because recognizing God's voice without responding to Him doesn't produce spiritual maturity.
Obedience does.
As we repeatedly hear and respond, trust grows. Our sensitivity grows. Our confidence in God's character grows.
And gradually our families become places where following the Spirit isn't strange.
It's normal.
We pray before decisions.
We search Scripture.
We weigh things carefully.
We listen to godly people.
We wait when God says wait.
We move when God says move.
And when He gives us something, we don't keep it to ourselves.
We let the river flow.
Because the Holy Spirit isn't simply trying to lead us toward a better life.
He is leading us into the purposes of God so that through our obedience, our families, churches, workplaces, neighborhoods, and communities can encounter Jesus.
The Scout knows the way ahead.
We don't have to see the whole road.
We just have to keep following.
